Origins of SCI
The
origins of SCI
begin with a company named W. A. Stephenson Construction (Western) Ltd.,
formed 1977. The founding owners of that company include the current
President and CEO of SCI.
Noteworthy projects included
construction of segments of the transit systems in Calgary, Edmonton, and
Vancouver, the Cambie Street Bridge (at the Expo 86 Site) in Vancouver, and
the 1988 Olympic Speed Skating Oval in Calgary. Throughout this period, we
earned a reputation for delivering the highest quality, on-time, and with
innovative thinking.
Projects completed prior to
1993 were executed by one of the W. A. Stephenson / SCI Engineers &
Constructors Group of Companies. |

SCI Engineers & Constructors
In
1985 growth and expanding market opportunities created
corporate re-organization. SCI Engineers & Constructors was
established to undertake the construction of large infrastructure projects,
particularly in the United
States. Major segments of the Downtown Metro Transit Project in
Seattle (four underground stations and cut/cover tunnel segment)
and the Windward Viaduct (1.25 mile long, 4 lane elevated highway skirting
the mountainous hillsides) near
Honolulu, Hawaii were constructed.
In Canada, a major presence in
infrastructure development continued, including the building of the Oldman
River Dam in Alberta (main dam and drainage tunnels) and the Cassiar
Connector Project in Vancouver (six bridges and major cut/cover tunnel).
Both of these projects were among the largest contracts ever awarded by the
Province of Alberta and the
Province of British Columbia. The success of these major projects earned the
company a well-deserved reputation for its skills and abilities. |

Strait Crossing Inc.
In
1988 a new, special purpose corporation, STRAIT CROSSING
INC. (SCI), was established to undertake the $1.0 billion
Confederation Bridge Project. Nearly all the senior staff of W. A.
Stephenson and SCI Engineers & Constructors were transferred to lead the
complete financing, design and construction of this major project. This
project was successfully completed, and received in excess of 20 national
and international awards, for engineering and environmental innovation and
excellence, including being recognized nationally as one of the top five (5)
Canadian engineering achievements of the 20th Century.
